How long does an unvented cylinder or Megaflo last?

Manufacturers do not publish a lifespan for an unvented cylinder. They publish warranty terms instead: Heatrae Sadia gives the Megaflo Eco a lifetime warranty in domestic installations, with 30 years on the inner tank of all Megaflo cylinders and 2 years on the remaining components. Ideal warrants the Thermstore vessel for 25 years, and Baxi warrants the stainless steel inner vessel of the Main Unvented Cylinder for 25 years. Those terms only hold if the unit was installed correctly, is serviced every year and is not damaged by scale. Hard water, a lost air charge and valves that no longer reseat are what end a cylinder early.

What do manufacturers actually promise about an unvented cylinder's life?

Warranty length is the only published figure for an unvented cylinder, and it is not the same as a lifespan. Heatrae Sadia gives the Megaflo Eco a lifetime warranty for domestic installations and 30 years for commercial ones. Every Megaflo cylinder carries 30 years on the inner tank and 2 years on all other components. Ideal lists 25 years on the Thermstore vessel with 2 years parts and labour.

Baxi lists 25 years on the stainless steel inner vessel of the Main Unvented Cylinder, with 1 year parts and labour. The split between vessel cover and parts cover tells you a lot. The vessel is the steel tank that holds your hot water. Valves, controls, the immersion heater and the expansion vessel are treated as serviceable parts and carry far shorter cover.

Does a Megaflo lifetime warranty cover everything, and what voids it?

A Megaflo lifetime warranty is conditional, not automatic. Heatrae Sadia sets out what has to be true for cover to apply:

  • The cylinder was installed to the installation manual and to the codes of practice and regulations in force at the time of installation.
  • The warranty was registered within 30 days of installation, with proof of purchase.
  • It is serviced in line with the maintenance section of the manual by a competent person, with all seals checked and replaced where they show degradation.
  • The product has not been subject to damage by scale, and runs on wholesome water.

Other makers word it the same way. Worcester Bosch states that its mains pressure cylinder guarantee covers the cylinder leaking through internal corrosion or a manufacturing fault, but not scale formation, and that the guarantee may be void without proof of annual servicing. Viessmann's cylinder warranty terms require a service record and a commissioning checklist before a claim is considered.

Why does the annual service decide how long an unvented cylinder lasts?

An unvented cylinder needs a service every year, whether it is direct or indirect. Heatrae Sadia describes annual servicing as essential to keep a hot water cylinder working reliably and safely. The visit is not a glance at the casing. The engineer recharges the air gap or the external expansion vessel, operates the temperature and pressure relief valve to confirm it discharges and reseats, inspects the seals, and checks that the immersion heater and thermostat hold the stored water at the right temperature.

Missing services costs you twice. The parts that wear — seals, valves and the air charge — go unchecked, and manufacturers such as Worcester Bosch and Viessmann ask for proof of servicing before they accept a claim.

How does hard water and water quality shorten a cylinder's life?

Scale builds up on the hottest surfaces inside a cylinder and blunts the performance of immersion heaters and primary heating coils, as Worcester Bosch explains in its water treatment guidance. Heatrae Sadia excludes damage by scale from the Megaflo warranty and requires wholesome water. In hard water areas, descaling the immersion heater will help extend the life of the cylinder and boost performance. That means removing the heater, so it is service work for a G3 qualified engineer, not a job for you.

Water chemistry matters in the other direction too. Heatrae Sadia recommends a chemical dosing type water conditioner where temporary hardness exceeds 150 mg/l. A water softener may be used with a Megaflo provided it does not restrict flow and the softened water stays below 250 mg/l of chloride. Worcester Bosch sets the same chloride limit in its cylinder instructions, with chloride and sulphate together capped at 300 mg/l. Glow-worm applies a chloride limit to the Hydracyl HP and excludes warranty claims where the supply is a private water supply.

What is a lost air charge, and why does it end unvented cylinders early?

Water expands as it heats, and an unvented cylinder needs somewhere for that expansion to go. Megaflo cylinders hold a cushion of air inside the tank; other designs use an external expansion vessel. Heatrae Sadia states that the air volume must be recharged periodically so expanded water can be taken up. Water discharging intermittently from the expansion relief valve is the signal that the air volume has become too small.

Relief valves are the second failure point. In normal running, no water should leave the discharge pipe at all. During a service the temperature and pressure relief valve is operated briefly. It must discharge freely through the tundish — the open gap in the discharge pipe where water can be seen passing — and then reseat cleanly. A valve that keeps passing water afterwards is a fault, and one for an engineer to deal with.

Worcester Bosch adds that the pre-charge pressure of an expansion vessel must match the setting of the pressure reducing valve, for example 3 bar, and that the vessel has to be sited where it can be reached for recharging. Recharging is a G3 task carried out at the annual service.

Which signs mean your unvented cylinder needs an engineer, and what can you check yourself?

Water leaving the outside discharge pipe or the tundish is the clearest sign that an unvented cylinder needs attention. Hot water turning lukewarm, or running out sooner than it used to, points at the immersion heater, the thermostat or a scaled coil. None of those are repairs you should attempt. Never cap or block a discharge pipe — it is the safety route for hot water under pressure.

Safe checks for you are limited to four things: the boiler pressure gauge, the thermostat and programmer settings, the boiler reset button, and bleeding radiators. Anything inside the cylinder — the air charge, relief valves, seals, the immersion heater — is work for a G3 qualified engineer. Do building regulations apply when you replace an unvented cylinder in England?

Replacing an unvented cylinder in England is controlled work under the Building Regulations. Schedule 1, Part G3 requires that a hot water storage system with no vent pipe open to the atmosphere is installed only by a person competent to do so. Safeguards must prevent the stored water exceeding 100°C and must discharge hot water safely. Approved Document G (2015 edition, with 2024 amendments) covers unvented systems up to 500 litres and under 45 kW supplied as a proprietary unit or package, with at least two independent safety devices in addition to the thermostat. Where the cylinder is heated indirectly, the energy cut-out may sit at the boiler.

Where the installer is registered with a competent person scheme, the work does not have to be notified to the building control body in advance. The installer self-certifies, and the scheme operator issues you a building regulations certificate of compliance. Keep that certificate with the service record — both are asked for in a warranty claim, and by a buyer's solicitor. Gas work on the boiler that heats the cylinder sits under separate law. In England, regulation 3 of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, as amended, states that no person may carry out work on a gas fitting unless they are competent to do so. What temperature should a hot water cylinder be set to?

HSE guidance is to store hot water at 60°C or above and to distribute it so that 50°C is reached at the outlets within one minute, or 55°C in healthcare premises. Worcester Bosch instructs that immersion heaters hold the stored water between 55°C and 65°C. HSE notes a scalding risk above 44°C, and recommends type 3 thermostatic mixing valves where vulnerable people use a bath or shower.

Can an unvented cylinder be repaired, or does the whole unit need replacing?

Valves, the expansion vessel, the immersion heater and the thermostat are serviceable parts, which is why manufacturers warrant them separately and for shorter terms than the tank. A leaking inner vessel is different — Worcester Bosch covers cylinder leaks caused by internal corrosion or a manufacturing fault under its guarantee, and that normally means a replacement unit. An engineer can tell which case you have after inspecting the cylinder.

Do I need building control approval to replace a hot water cylinder in England?

Yes. An unvented hot water storage system falls under Part G3 of the Building Regulations in England and may only be installed by a competent person. If the installer is registered with a competent person scheme, the job does not need notifying to building control in advance, and the scheme issues you a certificate of compliance.
