No, gas boilers are not banned in existing UK homes, and no rule tells you to remove the one you have. Is there a ban on the gas boiler in your existing home?
No law in England requires you to remove a working gas boiler from an existing home. The government's Heat and Buildings Strategy, published in October 2021, states it directly: "No-one will be forced to remove their existing boilers." Policy is moving through three separate strands instead of a household ban.
- Standards for new homes in England, set in building regulations.
- Grant funding for low carbon heating, such as the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
- A target scheme for manufacturers, the Clean Heat Market Mechanism.
None of those three strands switches off the boiler already fitted in your home. They change what goes into new houses, what is funded and what manufacturers must aim for.

What do the 2026 building regulations mean for gas boilers in new homes in England?
Gas boilers do not meet the new energy standard for new homes in England. The Building Regulations etc. (Amendment) (England) Regulations 2026 (SI 2026/335) were laid on 24 March 2026. They come into force on 24 March 2027, and on 24 September 2027 for higher-risk building work, subject to transitional provisions.
The government response to the 2023 Future Homes and Buildings Standards consultation confirms the position on appliances. Gas boilers, including hybrid systems and hydrogen-ready models, do not meet the proposed standard, which aims at homes that are "zero-carbon ready". These are building control rules for new work in England. They set what a developer installs in a new house. They do not reach back into a house that already runs on gas.
Why the "2025 gas boiler ban" you may have read about is out of date
The 2025 date comes from a government press release published in 2019, not from current law. That announcement, "Housing Secretary unveils green housing revolution", set out an intention for the Future Homes Standard. The dates that now carry legal force sit in SI 2026/335: laid 24 March 2026, in force 24 March 2027.
Many pages online still repeat the older year. If an article gives you a gas boiler ban date, check it against gov.uk or legislation.gov.uk. A date with no named regulation behind it is usually an old headline. Circulars can also amend the guidance after publication, which is why the named statutory instrument matters more than any summary.
Can you still replace a broken gas boiler with another gas boiler?
Replacing a failed gas boiler with a new gas boiler remains lawful in an existing home in England. Government policy is aimed at new homes, at funding and at manufacturer targets, not at your replacement decision. The Heat and Buildings Strategy of October 2021 is explicit that no-one will be forced to remove their existing boilers.
Work on a gas appliance must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. That duty comes from the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 as amended, which apply in England. You may safely check boiler pressure, thermostat and programmer settings, press the reset button and bleed radiators. Anything behind the casing, the flue or the gas supply is engineer's work.

Is 2035 a ban date for new gas boiler installations?
2035 is a government ambition, not a legal deadline. The gov.uk announcement "Plan to drive down the cost of clean heat" sets out the aim that heating systems installed from 2035 should be low carbon. No regulation turns that ambition into a duty for householders. An ambition can move; a statutory instrument is what binds.
The Warm Homes Plan is the current policy framework for existing homes. It stresses household choice, so people can choose the technologies that work for them as and when they want. Supported technologies have been widened rather than narrowed, including air-to-air heat pumps and heat batteries. The direction of travel is more options, not a cut-off date for the boiler you own.

Does the Clean Heat Market Mechanism ban gas boiler sales?
The Clean Heat Market Mechanism sets heat pump targets for manufacturers, not restrictions on households. It applies to firms that supply gas and oil boilers into the UK market. Their heat pump targets are set in proportion to countable boiler sales. The scheme started on 1 April 2025 and runs until at least 2029, across the whole UK.
The legal basis is The Clean Heat Market Mechanism Regulations 2025. Nothing in it stops you buying a gas boiler or having one fitted. It can shape which models manufacturers promote and how they price them. That is a market effect on the showroom, not a ban at your front door.
Which part of the UK does each gas boiler policy cover?
