What size hot water cylinder do you need?

A hot water cylinder is sized on the people and bathrooms it serves, not on the number of bedrooms. Baxi's rule of thumb is 45 to 60 litres per occupant, which puts a family of four at roughly 210 to 250 litres. Heatrae Sadia sizes on wet rooms instead, allowing about 60 litres each, which gives 210 litres for a two-bathroom house. Both figures are starting points. Peak demand, mains flow rate, cupboard space and the heat input in kilowatts decide the capacity you actually end up with.

What size hot water cylinder suits a two, three or four bedroom house?

Bedroom count is only a proxy for hot water cylinder size. Baxi puts a two-bedroom home with two or three occupants at 120 to 180 litres, and a three-bedroom home with three or four occupants at 180 to 240 litres. Ideal Heating lists cylinders up to 400 litres, described as enough for a four or five bedroom property with three standard bathrooms. Baxi adds that the actual capacity is a question for a qualified installer.

  • Two-bedroom home, two to three occupants: 120–180 litres (Baxi)

The two methods disagree for a reason. Occupants, en-suites and shower flow rate drive demand, while bedrooms only hint at it. A spare fourth bedroom draws no hot water at all. Two teenagers showering before 8am draw a great deal.

How much hot water does a UK household use in a day?

UK homes use around 90 litres of hot water per home per day on average. DESNZ measured that figure from connected devices in March 2024, against 104 litres in the earlier 2008 study, at an average occupancy of 2.4 people. Seasonal variation is small, roughly 5 litres a day either way. An older DECC measurement study of about 120 houses found a mean of 122 litres a day, and 116 litres in homes with a regular boiler.

For sizing a cylinder, the daily total matters less than the peak. DESNZ found that draw-off concentrates between 06:00 and 08:00, and again between 17:00 and 19:00. Your cylinder has to cover the morning block without running dry. It does not need to hold the whole day's usage at once.

Recovery time matters as much as the litres in the cylinder

Recovery time is set by kilowatts, not by litres. Heatrae Sadia separates the two clearly: size is how much water is stored, recovery is how quickly the cylinder reheats, and recovery depends on the heat input in kW. A large cylinder on a low heat input means a long wait once the stored water is gone. As a published example, Heatrae Sadia gives an expected recovery of 70% of a 210-litre cylinder in 30 minutes at roughly 15 kW heat input.

Ideal Heating makes the same point from the user's side. With a system or heat-only boiler, once the stored hot water is used, you wait for reheat. So the boiler pairing matters as much as the cylinder capacity, and the two are chosen together. If you are still weighing up boiler types, read combi, system or regular boiler. If the cylinder is cold while the radiators work, see no hot water but the heating still works.

A bigger hot water cylinder loses more heat every day

An oversized cylinder loses heat every day, whether you use the water or not. Viessmann states that manufacturers typically quote standing losses of 1 to 2.5 kWh per day, with high-efficiency models much lower — for example 0.7 kWh per day on a 160-litre model and 0.75 kWh per day on a 200-litre model. The larger the tank, the greater the heat loss. Viessmann also notes that stored water typically stays hot for a day or two, though no precise figure can be given.

That makes oversizing a standing cost for the life of the cylinder. You pay to heat water nobody draws. Undersizing costs you a cold second shower instead. Getting the capacity right is a one-off decision with a daily consequence either way.

Will the cylinder fit your cupboard, and will your mains feed it?

Space and incoming mains cap the useful size of a hot water cylinder. Worcester Bosch recommends a cupboard of about 750 mm square for its vertical cylinder models. Where that space is not there, slimline cylinders hold a comparable volume in a taller, narrower shape. The Megaflo Eco Slimline range is 100 to 200 litres nominal at a 491 mm diameter, with 50 mm of insulation.

The incoming main is the second limit. Worcester Bosch cylinder installation literature states that performance depends on adequate dynamic pressure and flow rate, enough to supply hot and cold at the same time. Pressure is not the same as flow, and dynamic pressure — the pressure while water is running — is lower than static pressure. Flow depends on the size, type and condition of the incoming main.

A pressure reducing valve may be needed, since maximum incoming pressure is normally around 10 bar. Check with your local water company if you are unsure what your main delivers. A 300-litre cylinder on a weak main will not give the shower performance you were expecting. For reference on available sizes, Worcester Bosch lists seven unvented variants from 90 to 300 litres, and the Vaillant uniSTOR standard range runs 150, 175, 210, 250 and 300 litres.

Why stored water sits at 60°C when a shower runs cooler

Water in a hot water cylinder is stored hotter than you ever use it. HSE guidance on hot and cold water systems says hot water should be stored at 60°C, and distributed so it reaches 50°C within one minute at the outlets. Those temperatures control legionella bacteria in the pipework. Approved Document G expects the cylinder to deliver outgoing water at at least 60°C, with a gauge at the cylinder outlet.

Scalding is then controlled by blending, not by turning the store down. HSE advises thermostatic mixing valves on baths and showers so delivered water does not exceed 44°C, and a TMV3 valve — a higher-specification mixing valve — where vulnerable people have access and the risk is significant. In England, Approved Document G3(4) limits hot water to a bath in a new dwelling to no more than 48°C. Because stored water is blended with cold before it reaches you, the litres on the cylinder label are not the litres that come out of the shower head.

Fitting an unvented cylinder in England is notifiable building work

Unvented hot water storage falls under requirement G3 of the Building Regulations in England. G3 covers unvented cylinders specifically, because an incorrectly installed unit could explode or cause danger from hot water discharge. Unvented systems are fed straight from the cold mains and have no vent pipe to release pressure to atmosphere. That is why the rules are tighter than for a loft-fed vented tank.

Approved Document G sets out what the installed system must include. Any unvented system up to 500 litres and under 45 kW should be a proprietary unit or package with components meeting an appropriate standard, such as BS EN 12897. Temperature relief must keep stored water below 100°C. Discharge runs through a tundish — the visible open gap in the discharge pipe — with no more than 600 mm of pipe between the valve outlet and the tundish.

Before an unvented system is installed in England, the building control body must be notified. Advance notification is not required where the installer is registered with a competent person scheme for unvented hot water systems. Work on the cylinder, its controls or its discharge pipework is not a householder job.

Is a 210-litre cylinder enough for a family of four?

Why does my hot water run out before the second shower?

Check your programmer and cylinder thermostat settings first, as a mistimed heating schedule causes the same symptom.
