Radiator hot at the top and cold at the bottom: what it means

A radiator that is hot at the top and cold at the bottom almost always has sludge sitting in the base of the panel. Sludge is magnetite, a black iron oxide formed as water passes over the steel and iron in your system, and it blocks heat from reaching the lower half. Bleeding will not shift it, because bleeding only releases trapped air. The cure is cleaning the water in the system, either in that one radiator or across the whole of it.

Cold at the bottom means sludge, cold at the top means air

Where the cold patch sits tells you the cause. A hot top with a cold bottom points to something blocking or diverting the water flow through the panel. Sludge settling at the base is the usual reason. A hot bottom with a cold top is the opposite problem: trapped air, which bleeding releases.

Getting this the wrong way round wastes an afternoon. Manufacturers set the two faults out separately for that reason. If you bleed a radiator and only air hisses out, the cold bottom stays cold.

Bleeding a radiator only removes trapped air. It does nothing to sludge lying in the bottom of the panel. If the lower half is still cold after bleeding, the water in the system needs cleaning, not venting.

What sludge actually is

Sludge is magnetite, a black iron oxide that forms inside a wet heating system. Radiators and pipework are mostly steel and iron. As water passes over them, iron compounds form and break away. Magnetite and haematite are the two main ones, joined by scale and other debris.

Those particles are heavy, so they drop to the lowest point they can find. In a radiator that is the bottom of the panel. The layer sits between the hot water and the metal surface and blocks the heat transfer. The top of the radiator still gets flow, so it still feels hot.

Left alone, sludge does more than cool one radiator. Manufacturers warn that it can block radiators and pipework and damage the boiler itself.

Other signs your system is carrying sludge

One cold radiator rarely turns up on its own. Boiler makers list several symptoms that tend to appear together.

  • You need to bleed radiators more often than you used to.
  • The system has become noisy — gurgling, knocking or kettling, a whistling and bubbling like a kettle coming to the boil.
  • More than one radiator has a cold lower section while the heating is clearly on.
  • Rooms take longer to warm up than they did, with no change to the controls.

None of these on its own proves anything. Together they build a fair picture of dirty system water.

Is it one radiator or the whole system?

The number of affected radiators changes what needs doing. One radiator cold at the bottom can often be dealt with on its own. Several radiators cold at the bottom points at the system water as a whole, and a system-wide clean makes more sense.

A different pattern is worth separating out. If every downstairs radiator runs cool and every upstairs one runs hot, that is more likely a balancing problem than sludge. Balancing is the process of setting how much water each radiator takes, using the lockshield valve that sits opposite the thermostatic valve.

A stuck pin inside a thermostatic radiator valve — the numbered head that controls room temperature — can also choke the flow. Do not force it. Have an engineer look at the valve, because a damaged pin creates a second problem.

What you can safely check first

A few checks are fine for you to do at home. They take minutes and rule out the simple causes.

  • Bleed the radiator. If air comes out and the top was the cold part, that was your fault.
  • Read the boiler pressure gauge. Manufacturers give a typical cold reading of 1 to 1.5 bar, with topping up needed below 1.0 bar. Your own manual gives the exact figure for your appliance.
  • Check the room thermostat and the programmer. A schedule that ends earlier than you think explains a lot of lukewarm radiators.
  • Press the reset button if the boiler has locked out. If it locks out again, stop and call an engineer.

Everything past that list belongs to a Gas Safe registered engineer. In England, the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, as amended, require work on gas fittings and appliances to be done by a competent person from an HSE-approved class. That covers anything on the gas supply, the flue or inside the boiler casing.

How the sludge is removed

Manufacturers describe three routes, and the right one depends on how far the problem has spread.

  • Chemical clean: a cleaner is dosed into the system, the heating runs warm for around an hour, then the system is flushed and the water replaced. It is a one-off measure.
  • Cleaning a single radiator: the radiator is isolated, taken off the wall and physically cleaned out. Sensible when only one panel is affected.
  • Power flush: water is pushed through the system at high pressure with specialist chemicals. It treats every radiator and the pipework, not just one.

Keeping it from building up again

A clean without protection puts you back where you started. Inhibitor slows the chemical reactions that create iron oxides, which is why it belongs in every wet heating system. BS 7593, the code of practice for water treatment in domestic central heating, sets that out.

Two habits keep the water clean after a flush. Inhibitor should be topped up roughly every five years, or after any work that has diluted the system water. A magnetic filter catches magnetic particles before they reach the boiler, and it should be cleaned each year at the service.

An annual service is the obvious time for both. HSE strongly advises having gas appliances, flues and pipework checked and maintained at least every 12 months by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Will bleeding the radiator fix a cold bottom?

No. Bleeding removes trapped air, and trapped air collects at the top of a radiator, not the bottom. If the top is hot and the bottom is cold, air is not the problem. Sludge in the base of the panel is the usual cause.

Does a radiator cold at the bottom mean I need a power flush?

Not automatically. One affected radiator can often be cleaned on its own, either chemically or by taking it off the wall. A power flush treats the whole system and makes more sense when several radiators are cold at the bottom. An engineer can tell you which applies after looking at the system.

Why is my radiator cold at the top instead?

That is the opposite fault and points to air trapped in the radiator. Bleeding the radiator releases it. Air rises, so it gathers at the highest point of the panel and keeps hot water out of that section.

Why does the boiler pressure drop after I bleed radiators?

Bleeding lets water and air out of a sealed system, so the gauge falls. Manufacturers give a typical cold reading of 1 to 1.5 bar and suggest topping up below 1.0 bar. Check your own manual for the exact figure, and do not overfill, because pressure rises again as the system heats.

Do I have to have a magnetic filter fitted?

A magnetic filter catches magnetic particles in the system water before they reach the boiler. It is a practical way to keep a cleaned system clean. Ask your installer what your boiler manufacturer expects, as their guidance and your warranty terms may differ.

How often should inhibitor be topped up?

Guidance from boiler manufacturers points to roughly every five years, and also after any work that has drained or diluted the system water.
