Heating in Enfield
Southgate, Winchmore Hill and Palmers Green went up in the twenties and thirties along the Piccadilly line extension, and much of the housing is generously sized — bay-fronted semis with three or four bedrooms, long gardens and, very often, a garage that has become a utility room with a radiator added to it. The pattern we see repeatedly is a system that has grown by accretion, one radiator at a time, without anybody ever going back to balance it. The result is a house where the rooms furthest from the boiler run cold and the ones nearest run too hot, and the thermostat sits in whichever room is wrong.
Balancing is the least glamorous work in heating and it is regularly the most useful. Setting the lockshield valves so that each radiator gets its share, checking the pump speed and the system pressure, and fitting controls that reflect how the house is actually used will transform a system like this for a fraction of the cost of a replacement. We say so even when it means a smaller job, because the alternative is a customer who spends four figures and still has a cold back bedroom.
Edmonton and Ponders End are a different picture again: a lot of postwar and ex-local-authority stock, considerable private letting, and a good number of systems with 1970s microbore pipework that has silted up over the decades. Those are the ones where a power flush genuinely earns its money, and where fitting a new boiler onto unflushed pipework is the fastest way to void the warranty on it.

What we get called out to in Enfield
Balancing systems that grew radiator by radiator
Cold at the far end, too hot near the boiler, thermostat in the wrong room. Setting the lockshields properly fixes more Enfield houses than a replacement boiler does.
Power flushing 1970s microbore
Narrow pipework silts up decades before larger pipe does. Fitting a new boiler onto it without flushing is how warranties get refused.
Utility rooms and garages added to the circuit
A radiator teed off the nearest pipe starves everything beyond it. We look at the whole circuit rather than the last thing added to it.

Questions from Enfield
Some radiators are red hot and others barely warm. Is the boiler failing?
Usually not. That is the classic signature of a system that has never been balanced, and it gets worse every time a radiator is added. The fix is setting the lockshield valve on each radiator so the flow is shared properly, plus checking pump speed. It is a visit, not an installation.
Is a power flush worth it before a new boiler?
On older pipework, yes, and most manufacturers make it a condition of the warranty. Sludge that has built up over thirty years does not stay politely in the old pipes when a new boiler starts pumping — it goes straight through the new heat exchanger.
Do you cover the whole of Enfield?
Yes, EN1 to EN3 and the N postcodes in the borough. It is the far side of London from our base, so we are honest about timing on emergency calls rather than promising an hour we cannot keep.
