Chiswick and the riverside strip are Victorian and Edwardian terraces, tall and narrow, with the kitchen at the back and the boiler almost always somewhere it should not be. Much of W4 sits inside a conservation area, which matters more than people expect: a flue on a front elevation, an external condensate pipe or a flue terminal near a neighbour's window can all turn a routine swap into a planning conversation. The middle of the borough — Hounslow itself, Heston, Isleworth — is largely interwar semi-detached and short terraces, the standard West London pattern of 1930s houses that were never designed around a heating system. Most have had two or three boilers over their life. The tell is the pipework: a modern condensing boiler bolted onto twenty-year-old pipes that were themselves added to fifty-year-old ones. South and west, towards Feltham and Bedfont, there is far more postwar and ex-local-authority stock and a big private rental market, helped along by Heathrow. That means two things for us: a steady run of landlord gas safety certificates, and a lot of appliances that have been serviced by whoever was cheapest that year. When we service one of those for the first time we usually find something worth knowing about, which is the point of a service rather than a tick in a box.
