Heating in Hammersmith & Fulham

The Fulham and Brook Green terraces are the defining stock here: two rooms wide, three or four floors once the loft is counted, and extended at the back by nearly everybody. That pattern creates a specific problem. The heating system was designed for a two-bedroom house on two floors; the house is now a four-bedroom house on four floors with two bathrooms and an en-suite, and the boiler is the same size it always was. Radiators on the top floor go lukewarm, the shower drops when the tap runs downstairs, and no amount of bleeding fixes either.

The honest answer in most of these houses is not a bigger combi. Height works against you — the further water has to travel up, the more the pressure drops — and a combi can only serve one outlet well at a time. What works is a system boiler with a properly sized unvented cylinder, usually in the loft or on a half-landing, so there is stored hot water at mains pressure for every outlet at once. Where the loft has already become a bedroom, siting that cylinder is the real design problem, and it is worth solving on paper before anything is bought.

Shepherd's Bush and White City add a large rental market and a lot of flats, including conversions where three flats share a building that was designed as one house. Those bring the usual conversion questions about flue positions and gas runs, and a steady flow of landlord certificates. Parking is worth mentioning, because it is real: most of the borough is a controlled parking zone, and a permit or bay suspension for a full installation day is something we sort out with you beforehand rather than discover on the morning.

What we get called out to in Hammersmith & Fulham

  • Hot water for loft-converted terraces

Four floors and two bathrooms need stored hot water at mains pressure. We size the cylinder against the outlets and find a home for it before the boiler is specified.

  • Top-floor radiators that never get hot

In a tall narrow house this is usually pump head and pipe sizing, not a failing boiler. Diagnosing it properly saves the cost of an appliance that would not have fixed it.

  • Parking and access on installation days

Nearly all of W6, W12 and SW6 is a controlled parking zone. We agree the permit or bay suspension with you in advance, because a full day's install cannot run off a two-hour bay.

Questions from Hammersmith & Fulham

Our shower drops to a trickle when someone runs the kitchen tap. Is the boiler failing?

Usually not. That is the signature of a combi boiler being asked to serve two outlets at once, which no combi can do well regardless of its output. A system boiler with an unvented cylinder stores hot water at mains pressure and serves several outlets together, which is why it suits a converted terrace far better.

Where would a cylinder go in a house with no airing cupboard left?

Most often a loft, a half-landing cupboard or the space above a stair bulkhead. It needs a safe discharge route for the pressure relief and enough room to service it, so we work out the position at survey and show you before you commit.

Do we need to arrange parking for you?

For a repair, no. For a full installation day we will ask you about a visitor permit or a bay suspension, because most of the borough is a controlled zone and an installation cannot be done from a two-hour bay. We raise it when we book, not on the day.
